Background of the Study
Tourism has emerged as a significant economic driver, influencing traditional crafts industries in Ikom Local Government, Cross River State. Historically, indigenous crafts were produced for local consumption and cultural expression, reflecting the community’s artistic heritage. With the growth of tourism, there has been increased demand for authentic cultural products, prompting artisans to adapt traditional techniques to meet commercial interests (Udo, 2023). This interaction between tourism and craftsmanship has led to both opportunities and challenges. While increased visibility can boost economic returns and cultural pride, it may also result in the commodification and alteration of traditional designs (Mba, 2024). Recent research suggests that tourism can either stimulate innovation in craft production or undermine cultural authenticity (Ekong, 2025). This study examines the multifaceted impact of tourism on the traditional crafts industries, assessing economic benefits, cultural transformations, and the sustainability of artisanal practices. Progress persists.
Statement of the Problem
Tourism has significantly impacted traditional crafts industries in Ikom Local Government, often leading to the commercialization and modification of indigenous art forms. The demand for tourist-oriented products has resulted in changes to traditional designs and production methods, potentially compromising cultural authenticity (Udo, 2023). Artisans face the dilemma of balancing economic gains with the preservation of traditional techniques (Mba, 2024). The rapid influx of tourists and market pressures further exacerbate these challenges, risking the erosion of cultural heritage (Ekong, 2025). The study seeks to identify the underlying factors contributing to these changes and propose viable interventions to ensure sustainable future. Effective interventions are essential for sustainable cultural and economic preservation.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the economic impact of tourism on traditional crafts.
To evaluate the influence of market demands on cultural authenticity.
To propose sustainable strategies for preserving indigenous craft practices.
Research Questions:
How does tourism affect the production and design of traditional crafts in Ikom?
What are the economic benefits and cultural costs associated with tourism in crafts industries?
How can sustainable practices be implemented to preserve traditional crafts?
Research Hypotheses:
Tourism significantly alters traditional craft production methods.
Increased tourist demand negatively affects cultural authenticity in crafts.
Sustainable strategies can balance economic benefits and cultural preservation in the crafts industry.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines the impact of tourism on traditional crafts industries, highlighting the balance between economic development and cultural preservation. The research provides insights for artisans, tourism stakeholders, and policymakers to develop sustainable practices that protect indigenous heritage while enhancing economic opportunities (Udo, 2023). Ultimately, the findings contribute to the discourse on cultural sustainability and economic resilience in artisanal sectors.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing the impact of tourism on traditional crafts industries in Ikom Local Government, Cross River State. It focuses on economic, cultural, and production aspects, excluding other tourism-related industries.
